Wine grapes from least to most tannins

Gamay, pinot noir, sangiovese, tempranillo, zinfandel, syrah, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, nebbiolo.

Please note that this is a general indication – the origin of the wine and process used (such as aging) may change the order of this list. See Somm’s comment below.

    Where did this list come from? You must specify a growing site/region to have this discussion, plus clonal selections…so many different factors here. As a broad example, most New World Merlots are certainly NOT more tannic than than most N. Rhone Syrah or Sangiovese from Tuscany.
